(KPL) The government is expecting to increase annual pork production to over 97,000 tonnes by 2020 and annum pork production to at least 116,000 tonnes by 2025 to ensure food consumption in the country.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has called for local producers to shift from traditional pig raising to more market-oriented farming. The ministry has said that the number of breeding sows needs to be increased to 45,000 and pig feed production must be increased and of higher quality.

The ministry also stressed the promotion of vaccination and de-worming of pigs so that disease outbreaks can be reduced among pig populations.

The government has, however, made it a priority to raise indigenous pigs in Phongsaly, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang, Huaphan, Xieng Khuang, Vientiane, Savannakhet, Khammuan, Saravan, Champassak and Xekong.

In addition, relevant authorities have also encouraged local farmers to raise additional goats (to reach 250,000 goats or over 4,000 tonnes per year) to ensure that meat production in the country is enough for local consumption.

Goats are mostly raised in Phongsaly, Oudomxay, Huaphan, Xieng Khuang, Vientiane, Borikhamxay, Saravan, Xekong and Attapeu.

Currently, there are almost 14,000 large scale farms for breeding sows, while goat farms currently number over 70, representing a 65 per cent increase as compared to the figure recorded in 2010.
