The great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung formed the Down-with-Imperialism Union in October 1926 and declared a do-or-die war against  imperialism. He had never deviated from his determination to achieve the country’s independence by the Korean people themselves throughout the anti- Imperialism war. 

At that time, the preceding theorists believed that the cause of national liberation in a colonial country depended on the victory of the revolution in the suzerain country. With a clear insight into the limitations of the existing theory on the national liberation movement in colonies, however, he put forward the idea that no one can bring independence to the colonial people and that the people in colonies can achieve the cause of national liberation only through their own struggle. 

Considering that the only way to defeat the armed enemy and liberate the country lies in waging an armed struggle, he advanced the unique line of armed struggle with guerrilla warfare as its main form and founded the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army. Given that there was no correct theory or experience related to national liberation struggle in colonies, this line was the best way to expand and develop the armed struggle for the independence of the country by dint of self-reliance. 

The KPRA was founded with a little more than a hundred people. It had to fight against modernly-equipped one-million-strong Imperialist’s Army. But the Imperialist’s Army,           sustained one defeat after another, trapped by the protean guerrilla strategies and tactics of the KPRA led by Kim Il Sung. 

What is particularly noteworthy is that Kim Il Sung achieved Korea’s liberation not merely with the KPRA but on the strength of the great unity of all the people. While expanding the anti-Imperialism armed ranks into the core force of the struggle for national liberation, he founded the Association for the Restoration of the Fatherland embracing all the people who loved the country and expanded it on a nationwide scale, thus arousing the broad sections of the people to the war against the Imperialism. 

On August 9, 1945, the KPRA launched a general offensive for national liberation on the order of Kim Il Sung. They advanced forward annihilating the Imperialist’s forces and the local people at home joined efforts by launching an armed uprising in different parts of the country.  

Finally, Korea was liberated, which opened the way for its people to create a new life, and the country, once eclipsed on the world map, could emerge before the world as a full-fledged democratic, independent and sovereign state.
