KPL The Embassy of Japan in the Lao PDR hosted a send-off party on July 31, 2026, at the Settha Palace Hotel in Vientiane to celebrate 22 Lao scholars who will soon depart for Japan to pursue advanced studies under two prestigious scholarship programs.

The cohort comprises 21 fellows under the Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) and one scholar under the Young Leaders Program (YLP). All were selected through a rigorous application and screening process and will be enrolled at various universities across Japan to further their academic and professional development.
The event brought together the new fellows alongside alumni of both programs, highlighting the enduring strength of the scholarship network that Japan has cultivated in Laos over the years. To date, more than 551 Lao nationals have studied in Japan under the JDS program, while 76 have participated in the YLP, creating a growing community of highly skilled professionals and leaders.
The gathering opened with a toast proposed by Mr. Kingmano Phommahaxay, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education and Sports, who set a warm and encouraging tone for the evening as guests celebrated the scholars' upcoming journey.
Japanese Ambassador to Laos  Koizumi Tsutomu extended heartfelt congratulations to the new fellows, expressing confidence in their ability to excel in their studies and return to contribute meaningfully to Laos' socio-economic development. He emphasized the importance of people-to-people exchanges in deepening the bilateral relationship between Japan and the Lao PDR.
The latter portion of the party offered an invaluable opportunity for the new fellows to engage directly with alumni and senior Lao government dignitaries. In an atmosphere of camaraderie, seasoned alumni shared practical advice and insights on academic life in Japan, helping to ease the transition for the departing scholars.
The JDS and YLP programs represent a cornerstone of Japan's official development assistance to Laos, focusing on human resource development and the nurturing of next-generation leaders. These initiatives are designed to equip Lao professionals with advanced knowledge and skills in fields critical to the nation's growth, including governance, economics, public policy, and infrastructure development.
