KPL The Embassy of France in Laos hosted a vibrant celebration of the Month of Francophonie at the Residence of France in Vientiane, bringing together diplomats, government representatives, international organisations, academics and friends of the Francophone community to celebrate the French language and its shared values.

Organised in partnership with several Francophone countries present in Laos, including Belgium, Cambodia, Canada, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Vietnam, the reception highlighted the importance of dialogue, solidarity, cooperation and cultural diversity within the Francophone world. The event showcased the spirit of unity that the French language fosters across continents and cultures.

The evening opened with a presentation by a delegation of students from Lycée Hoffet, made up of five young people of different nationalities—Korean, Lao, Spanish, Belgian and Dutch—who were accompanied by their classical literature teacher, Ms Coralie Sérieys. The students spoke about the values of Francophonie and demonstrated the cultural diversity that characterises the Francophone community, while also underlining the important role of young people in preserving and promoting the French language for future generations.

French Ambassador to Laos, Ms. Bénédicte Descamps, highlighted the significance of Francophonie as a platform for dialogue, education and cultural exchange. She reaffirmed France’s commitment, together with its partners, to promoting the French language and strengthening cooperation in the fields of education, culture and international engagement. The ambassador also stressed that Francophonie represents more than a shared language, serving as a bridge that connects people and fosters mutual understanding among nations.

Guests were invited to experience a rich culinary journey through the Francophone world, with a wide selection of traditional dishes and delicacies prepared by participating countries. French specialties included petits-fours, mini foie gras madeleines, croque-monsieur, pâté terrines on toast, chocolate fondants and fruit desserts. Canada presented tourtière, pecan pie and chocolates, while Luxembourg offered sausages and white wine. Swiss raclette, Belgian fries, Vietnamese nem rán and Cambodian dishes further enriched the gastronomic showcase.

In total, thirteen stands were set up in the gardens of the Residence of France, decorated in the colours of member states of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere for guests.

Several interactive activities were organised to help participants explore Francophonie in an engaging way. An interactive quiz on the history of Francophonie, its member countries and notable figures from the Francophone world attracted strong participation, with numerous prizes awarded to winners thanks to the support of TV5Monde, the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie and the Embassy of France.

Additional installations also highlighted the diversity of Francophone culture. A “Francophone Proverbs Tree” invited guests to share their favourite quotes and expressions, while flags of member countries and greetings in different Francophone variations were displayed along the main pathway. A Francophone music playlist accompanied the evening, allowing participants to travel across continents through music and sound.

The celebration reflected the enduring importance of Francophonie in promoting cultural exchange, mutual understanding and international cooperation. By bringing together people from different backgrounds and nationalities, the event reinforced the role of the French language as a unifying force and highlighted the continued commitment of Francophone countries to strengthening partnerships in Laos and across the region.
