Laos seeks solutions to fuel shortages as stations close despite available supplies

KPL Authorities in Laos are investigating fuel shortages after a number of petrol stations remained closed despite reports of adequate fuel reserves, officials said following a consultative meeting on 19 March 2026.

The meeting, chaired by Industry and Commerce Minister Malaythong Kommasith, brought together government departments, the Fuel and Gas Association, and private sector operators to examine the causes of the disruption in supply.

Officials said the closures appeared inconsistent with existing fuel stock levels, prompting concerns over distribution and market operations.

To address the issue, the government plans to establish a special committee, led by a deputy minister, to oversee the use of state funds to support fuel businesses. The measure aims to help operators reopen stations and avoid financial losses during the current supply difficulties. Authorities said the funds would be repaid once the situation stabilises.

Participants also proposed studying the feasibility of expanding fuel reserves and developing pipeline infrastructure to strengthen long-term energy security.

The Department of Domestic Trade has been tasked with coordinating nationwide monitoring, requiring local trade officials to submit daily reports on fuel supply conditions.

At the meeting, Mr Kommasith called on companies to provide accurate and timely data on fuel imports, storage, distribution and retail operations, to enable the government to respond more effectively and adjust policies as needed.
