(KPL) Hans-Ulrich Südbeck, Ambassador of Germany to the Lao PDR, paid a field visit to Sekong Province on March 13 to observe the implementation of the School Meals Programme and review progress in strengthening food security and nutrition initiatives.

During the visit, Ambassador Südbeck noted that the programme plays an important role in promoting national development by addressing child nutrition while encouraging school attendance and reducing dropout rates.

He explained that the initiative also supports local economic development by sourcing food ingredients from village farmers, creating a stable source of income for rural communities. Technical guidance provided through the programme helps ensure that school meals are nutritious and balanced.

The Ambassador also highlighted the importance of women’s empowerment in community development, noting that women often play a central role in childcare, food preparation and family well-being. He stressed the need to strengthen women’s participation in decision-making and improve access to land rights and financial services.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Südbeck emphasized the importance of ensuring the long-term sustainability of the programme, with the goal of increasing ownership by the Lao government and local communities.

He noted that improving nutrition and education for children will help nurture the next generation and contribute to the future development of the Lao PDR
