(KPL) At the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Minister Suansavanh Vignaket welcomed Mel Barlow, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Kingdom to the Lao PDR, for a courtesy meeting focused on enhancing bilateral tourism cooperation.

During the discussion, the Minister highlighted the steady rise in British visitors to Laos. In 2025, arrivals from the United Kingdom reached 43,431, reflecting continued growth compared to the previous year.

She noted that British tourists generally fall into two key segments: senior travelers, who favor leisure, cultural, historical, and nature-based experiences, and younger visitors, who are increasingly drawn to adventure tourism.

The Minister reaffirmed that tourism remains a priority sector for the Lao government, playing a crucial role in driving national socio-economic development.

The Ambassador expressed appreciation for the warm reception and commended Laos for its tourism growth. She praised the country’s natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and distinctive traditions. At the same time, she raised several areas for improvement, including the need for more accessible tourism information and stronger safety standards, particularly in high-risk adventure activities.

In response, the Minister stated that the Party and Government are closely addressing these concerns. The Ministry is working with relevant sectors to implement key improvements, including strengthening safety and hygiene standards, ensuring food and beverage safety, reducing noise pollution, and expanding communication through digital platforms to better inform international visitors.

She also emphasized stricter enforcement measures, including legal action and license suspension for tourism operators who fail to comply with national regulations.

Looking ahead, both sides agreed on the importance of enhancing capacity across the tourism sector, including public institutions, private operators, and tour guides.

The Minister called on the British Embassy to support these efforts through short-term training programs, long-term scholarships, and technical cooperation, with the goal of improving service quality, strengthening safety standards, and elevating Laos’ international tourism profile.
