(KPL) On the occasion of International Women's Day, March 8, 2026, Ambassador Malaivieng Sakonhninhom extended her congratulations and best wishes to Lao women at home and abroad, reaffirming commitment to advancing gender equality and justice.
In her message, the Ambassador noted that International Women’s Day, officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, serves as a global platform to celebrate women’s achievements and advocate for equal rights and opportunities.
Highlighting this year’s UN theme, “Give to Gain,” she said the slogan underscores the importance of investing in women’s empowerment. When women have access to education, opportunities, respect and a voice in decision-making, societies as a whole benefit.
The 2026 theme prioritizes strengthening access to justice for women and girls by promoting inclusive legal systems, eliminating discriminatory laws and policies, and addressing structural barriers that hinder equality.
Citing UN data, the Ambassador said women globally hold only 64 percent of the legal rights enjoyed by men. She noted that in key areas such as employment, finance, safety, family assets and freedom of movement, legal gaps persist. At the current pace, it could take centuries to close the global protection gap.
Turning to Laos, she referenced the Women, Peace and Security Index 2025–2026, which ranks Lao women 83rd out of 181 countries globally and 5th among 11 ASEAN member states.
She expressed pride in national progress, highlighting key legal frameworks including the Law on Gender Equality, the Law on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women, the Law on the Lao Women’s Union and the Law on the Rights of Children, while emphasizing that effective implementation remains essential.
The Ambassador concluded by extending heartfelt congratulations to all women on March 8, reaffirming that advancing equality, justice and empowerment remains a shared responsibility.
