High-profile politician Valy Vesaphong has confirmed she will not seek re-election to the National Assembly in the upcoming polls, scheduled for Sunday, 22 February 2026.
Ms Vesaphong, a respected figure who has served as a people’s representative for a decade, announced her decision via social media. She cited a desire to return to the private sector and a wish to clear the path for a new generation of leaders.A decade of public serviceReflecting on her two terms in office, Ms Vesaphong described her ten-year tenure as the "highest honour" of her life. During her time in the 8th and 9th legislatures, she earned a reputation as a vocal advocate for the business community and a vital bridge between the public and private sectors.In her statement, she expressed deep gratitude to the Party, the National Assembly, and the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI) for the opportunity to serve as a legislator."I have performed my duties with dedication and sincerity, always prioritising the collective interests of the nation and its people," she said, noting that she had successfully fulfilled her political mandate.Focus on private enterpriseMs Vesaphong indicated that she intends to refocus her energy on her business interests, which she views as another essential way to contribute to the national economy."I want to give the younger generation the opportunity to serve the country, just as I was given," she remarked, expressing confidence in the calibre of the new candidates standing for the 10th legislature.Despite her departure from formal politics, Ms Vesaphong called on citizens to exercise their right to vote this coming Sunday to ensure the continued development of the nation."Every change is intended for improvement," she reassured her followers.
