The Embassy of India in Vientiane hosted a grand reception on January 26, 2026, to mark the 77th Republic Day of India, bringing together distinguished guests to celebrate the enduring friendship between India and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

Indian Ambassador to Laos Yogeshwar Sangwan
The event was attended by Minister of Technology and Communications Santisouk Simmalavong, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Phongsamouth Anlavan, Vice Minister of Industry and Commerce Manothong Vongsay, and Indian Ambassador to Laos Yogeshwar Sangwan. Around 300 guests, including senior government officials, ambassadors, diplomats, prominent members of the Lao and Indian communities, and friends of India, participated in the reception.

The programme commenced with the playing of the national anthems of the Lao PDR and India, followed by a welcome address by the Ambassador of India. This was accompanied by the raising of toasts by the Ambassador and eminent guests.

In his address, Ambassador Yogeshwar Sangwan highlighted the strong and growing bilateral relations between India and the Lao PDR, outlining India’s key achievements over the past 77 years. He emphasized the shared values that form the foundation of India–Lao PDR relations and noted that 2026 marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries. To commemorate this milestone, a series of activities has been planned throughout the year to celebrate close diplomatic cooperation and shared cultural heritage.

Cultural performances added a special dimension to the evening. The National School of Performing Arts presented an excerpt from the Ramayana, or Ramakien, reflecting the deep cultural links between the two nations. A contemporary dance group, Fang Lao, also delighted guests with performances set to popular Bollywood songs.
The reception followed earlier Republic Day celebrations held at the Embassy’s Chancery premises, which included the unfurling of the Indian national flag and cultural performances by members of the Indian in Laos.
