(KPL) Heangboun Street, also known as Centrepoint and located in the heart of Vientiane Capital, has emerged as a vibrant meeting point for both domestic and international tourists, offering a lively blend of culture, cuisine, and modern urban lifestyle within the historic old town area.

The street now brings together more than 100 shops in a single location, including permanent and mobile vendors, creating a colorful night market atmosphere filled with the aromas of traditional Lao cuisine, international food, beverages, and fresh fruits, alongside modern and fashionable goods that appeal to visitors of all ages.

The transformation of Heangboun Street (Centrepoint) into a night market marks an important milestone for Lao small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) under the framework of sustainable urban development. The initiative is part of infrastructure improvements implemented through the Sustainable Transport Project (BRT) and places strong emphasis on empowering Lao entrepreneurs to take ownership of management and operations. This approach not only stimulates the grassroots economy but also proudly showcases a modern national image rooted in local identity. As part of the project, the street has been comprehensively upgraded, including improvements to the roadway, sidewalks, drainage system, and street lighting.

Mr. Phanouvong, a vendor selling traditional Lao sticky rice snacks, told Lao News Agency reporters that the government’s decision to entrust Lao entrepreneurs with the management of the area has fostered a strong sense of ownership among vendors. He noted that traders strictly adhere to regulations, particularly those related to cleanliness and service quality.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Noy, a vendor selling various types of shellfish, expressed her satisfaction with the street’s renewed appearance and the opportunity for local traders to sell their own products, enabling them to generate income for their families. She also voiced her appreciation for the Heangboun Street project, describing it as a Lao-led initiative that has successfully elevated the street to international standards without relying on foreign concessions. She added that Lao-led management enhances mutual understanding, keeps money circulating within the country, and, most importantly, preserves the unique character of the old town area.
