KPL Vientiane will soon be home to Laos’ first University of Health Sciences (UHS) Hospital—a state-of-the-art 400-bed tertiary teaching facility in Dongposi, Hadxayfong district. With construction set to begin in late 2025, the hospital is expected to open by 2028.

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Jung Yung-soo (first from left), visited the  UHS  construction site in Vientiane on August 14.

(KPL) Vientiane will soon be home to Laos’ first University of Health Sciences (UHS) Hospital—a state-of-the-art 400-bed tertiary teaching facility in Dongposi, Hadxayfong district. With construction set to begin in late 2025, the hospital is expected to open by 2028.

The $120 million project is funded through a soft loan from the Republic of Korea’s Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF), with an additional $21 million in counterpart funding from the Lao government.

More than just a hospital, the UHS facility will serve as a national hub for medical education, research, and clinical training—equipping future healthcare professionals to meet Laos’ growing needs in both urban and rural areas.

“This is a long-term investment in Laos’ health and human capital,” said a senior project official. “The hospital will raise care standards, expand medical education, and strengthen our healthcare system’s resilience.”

Designed with accessibility, patient safety, and sustainability in mind, the hospital will feature modern infrastructure, cutting-edge medical equipment, and integrated ICT systems. It will also house specialized learning and research centers to support hands-on training for medical students.

As the country’s first tertiary teaching hospital, the UHS facility will play a crucial role in addressing Laos’ healthcare workforce shortages. Upon completion, it will supply qualified professionals to hospitals, health centres, and clinics nationwide—from central institutions to provincial and district-level facilities.

The project marks a major milestone in Laos’ efforts to enhance healthcare services, advance medical education, and promote sustainable development.

The construction agreement was signed in Vientiane on June 19, 2025.
