(KPL) On August 11, 2025, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Anouphab Vongnorkeo received a courtesy visit from Bakhodir Burkhanov, UN Resident Coordinator in the Lao PDR, who introduced himself and congratulated the Deputy Minister on his new appointment.

Mr. Anouphab welcomed the visit and expressed appreciation for the UN’s longstanding cooperation and support to the Lao PDR. He voiced confidence that under Mr. Burkhanov’s leadership, UN assistance would continue to align with the government’s priorities as outlined in the 9th National Socio-Economic Development Plan and the forthcoming National Development Plan. This, he said, would be achieved through joint activities and projects under the framework of sustainable development cooperation between the Lao government and the UN.

The Deputy Minister encouraged the UN network in the Lao PDR to continue mobilizing resources in support of the country’s development priorities, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, other international development agendas, and the government’s goal of a gradual, high-quality, and sustainable transition from Least Developed Country (LDC) status.

Mr. Burkhanov thanked the Deputy Minister for the warm welcome and pledged to further strengthen cooperation between the UN system and the Lao government in implementing programs that advance the country’s development goals.

He noted that 2025 is a milestone year, marking both the 70th anniversary of the Lao PDR’s accession to the UN and the 80th anniversary of the UN’s founding. The Lao government and UN agencies will jointly organize events to celebrate these anniversaries.

The Deputy Minister assured the UN Resident Coordinator of the Lao government’s continued support for UN agencies in effectively implementing development plans, and wished him success in his mission.

Mr. Burkhanov has served as the UN Resident Coordinator in the Lao PDR since mid-2023. In this role, he leads and serves as the main focal point within the UN system to ensure coherence and coordination of assistance programs and projects, avoiding duplication and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of UN support to member states.
