(KPL) President of the National Assembly Xaysomphone Phomvihane received a courtesy visit from Gen. Songwit Noonpakdee, Chief of Defense Forces of Thailand, and his delegation during their official working visit to the Lao PDR.

The visit aimed to strengthen the long-standing friendship, good-neighbourly relations, and strategic partnership between Laos and Thailand.

Mr. Xaysomphone expressed appreciation for the close cooperation between the Ministries of Defense of the two countries, particularly their joint efforts in maintaining peace and security along the shared border. These efforts include the prevention and resolution of cross-border drug trafficking, illegal immigration, and smuggling, contributing to the transformation of the border into a zone of peace, friendship, and development for the benefit of peoples of the two countries.

He also praised the outcomes of the recent meeting between the Lao and Thai defense ministries, which reviewed past cooperation, exchanged experiences, and outlined future collaboration.

The NA President emphasized the importance of continuing to implement the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two ministries and to step up efforts to maintain border security, demarcate the land boundary, and address border-related issues. He further proposed enhancing cooperation between the legislative bodies of both nations.

Gen. Songwit thanked the National Assembly President for the warm welcome and highlighted the success of his bilateral meeting with his Lao counterpart. He noted that both sides had jointly reviewed decades of cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic relations on December 19, 1950.

The year 2025 will mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Laos and Thailand.

During the meeting, the two delegations also discussed future directions for cooperation between their respective countries and defense ministries. Gen. Songwit exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest and briefed the host on recent developments in Thailand.
