Heavy Rain, Flash Flood, and Landslide Warning Issued for Multiple Provinces in Laos

KPL The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has issued its third warning regarding heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides expected to affect large parts of Laos between July 22 and 24.

(KPL) July 22, 2025 — The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has issued its third warning regarding heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides expected to affect large parts of Laos between July 22 and 24.

According to the official notice (No. 0533/DoMH), issued at 14:00 today, Tropical Cyclone Wipha—located at 20.5°N, 106.2°E—is moving west-northwest at 15 km/h. It is forecasted to weaken into a depression and further into a strong low-pressure system over northern Laos by July 23. Combined with an active southwest monsoon, the system is expected to bring widespread thunderstorms, with heavy to very heavy rain and strong winds across the northern and central regions.

The following provinces and districts are at risk of flash floods and landslides:

Phongsaly: Bountay

Houaphanh: Xamneua, Hiem, Viengxay, Houahouang, Xamtai, Xon, Kwan

Xieng Khouang: Kham, Khun, Mok Mai, Paek, Phoukout, Sui

Bokeo: Meung, Paktha, Pha Oudom

Luang Namtha: Long, Sing, Viengphoukha

Oudomxay: Beng, Houn, Nga, Pak Beng, Xay

Luang Prabang: Chomphet, Nam Bak, Nan, Ngoi, Pak Xang, Pak Ou, Phonxay, Phoukhun, Viengkham, Xieng Nguen

Xayaburi: Hongsa, Khop, Nang, Paklay, Xieng Hon

Xaysomboun: Anouvong, Hom, Longsan, Thathom

Bolikhamxay: Bolikhan, Khamkeut, Pakkading, Viengthong

Vientiane Province: Kasi, Vang Vieng, Med, Sanakham, Phuong

Khammouane: Hinboun, Nakai, Yommalath

Savannakhet: Tana, Thapangthong

Saravan: Taoy, Tuom Lan

Sekong: Kaleum, Dakchok

Attapeu: Sanxay, Sanamxay, Phouvong

The department urges all ethnic communities, local authorities, and relevant organizations—including those in Vientiane Capital—to exercise heightened caution and prepare for potential urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides over the coming days.

Residents are advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
