(KPL) The agriculture, forestry, and rural development plan for 2025 will focus on promoting commercial agriculture to enhance income generation, ensure food security, and reduce poverty of the Lao people.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Kikeo Singnalong told the annual Agriculture and Forestry Sector meeting, held in Vientiane from January 30-31, that the plan must also consider connectivity, the abundance of natural resources in each area, and local knowledge.
The sector has set an ambitious goal to expand commercial food production and promote high-potential agricultural products that meet food safety standards and sustainable development requirements.
According to the deputy minister, the sector aims to increase agricultural output by 4.3% in 2025, with crop farming growing by 3.9%, animal husbandry by 4.7%, forestry by 5.7%, and fisheries by 4.4%.
The plan also targets raising agriculture's contribution to GDP to 22.4% this year.
Laos aims to produce 3.9 million tons of rice in 2025, including 3.26 million tons of rainy season rice and 450,000 tons of dry season rice.
The country’s key rice-bowl provinces include Khammuan, Savannakhet, Saravan, Champassak, Xayaboury, Luang Namtha, and Bokeo.
