(KPL) French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD)'s representative office in Lao held its Scientific and Strategic Steering Committee (CPSS) on November 19 in Luang Prabang with Laotian and French partners to assess the needs and priorities on ecosystem sustainability and One Health approach.
Through round-table discussions, presentations and interactive workshops, Laotian and French scientists officials, donors, companies, academics and associations discussed ongoing interdisciplinary projects and se the agenda for next steps and priority actions on land use, soil and water resources, biodiversity and pathogen transmission.
New research and training center for Southeast Asian professionals and students specialized in food safet issues and water-related health risks, the SMART observatory (Sustainable Mountain Agroecosystem Research and Training station) in Ban Lak Sip has been inaugurated by local authorities, Laotian Ministr of Agriculture and Forestry, French Ambassador to Laos and IRD Representative in Laos. H.E. Ms Siv-Leng Chhuor described the SMART observatory "as a symbol of cooperation, and shared knowledge, bridging generations in the pursuit of a sustainable future." The station will contribute to the devise of environmentall- and socially sustainable development solutions in isolated mountainous areas of northern Laos, as continuation of M-TROPICS observatory.
As part of IRD's 80th anniversary celebration, a cocktail reception has been held at the French Institut in Luang Prabang, with opening speeches by H.E. the French Ambassador to Laos, the Director of the French Institute in Luang Prabang and IRD representative in Laos. The evening featured photo exhibitions an scientific short film screenings on health anthropology, waste management on the scale of Vientiane landfil and exposure of waste pickers to health risks.
