ASEAN Officials Discuss Timor-Leste’s Membership Preparation

(KPL) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith chaired the 35th ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC) Meeting under the theme “ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience” in Vientiane on Oct 8.

The meeting focused on the progress made in preparing Timor-Leste’s membership in ASEAN, including the implementation of the Roadmap for Timor-Leste’s Full Membership in ASEAN. Additionally, discussions covered the preparation of draft legal instruments related to Timor-Leste’s accession to various ASEAN agreements.

During the session, the council reviewed and adopted 13 reports across the three ASEAN Community pillars. 

These included the Report of the Secretary-General of ASEAN on the Functions and Operations of the ASEAN Secretariat, the Report of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR), the Report of the Chair of the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Task Force, the Report of the ASEAN Connectivity Coordinating Committee (ACCC), and the 2024 Annual Progress Report of the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN).

The meeting also reviewed the outcome documents to be presented at the upcoming 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits. Furthermore, it approved the nomination of San Lwin from Myanmar, based on alphabetical rotation, for the position of Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community for the 2024-2027 term.
