(KPL) – On Monday, Sep 2, the Ministry of Education and Sports officially inaugurated the 2024-2025 academic year.

The ceremony was attended by Minister of Education and Sports Phout Simmalavong, government ministers, former leaders, and representatives from relevant offices, both in-person and virtually.

In his opening remarks, Minister Phout Simmalavong highlighted the importance of this academic year as it marks the final phase of the 9th Five-Year Education, Science, and Sports Development Plan. He acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead, including teacher shortages, low enrollment rates, and high dropout rates, as well as the broader socio-economic difficulties that could impact the efforts of educators and administrators.

Despite these challenges, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to prioritize education, science, and sports, ensuring continued progress in these areas during the new school year. Minister Phout called on all stakeholders to take ownership of their responsibilities and collaborate to overcome obstacles, striving to achieve positive changes in education.

He urged everyone involved to be fully prepared and dedicated to implementing the teaching and learning plans for the 2024-2025 academic year, with a strong focus on achieving better outcomes than in previous years.

During the ceremony, attendees watched a video highlighting key activities from the past academic year and congratulatory messages from the Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. The event also featured presentations from student representatives, teachers, and members of the education development committees, who shared their thoughts and aspirations for the new school year.

The Lao PDR is a culturally rich and diverse country, with four main ethnolinguistic groups incorporating over 50 languages. Almost 40% of the Lao population speak a language other than Lao. Many grade 1 students, especially those from remote and disadvantaged areas, begin their first year of school without the necessary oral Lao language skills needed to learn, given that Lao language is the language of instruction. How can these students effectively learn and participate in classroom activities if they don’t understand the teacher?
