Three years later the bridge was put into public use. Australia funded the project as a gift for the peoples of Laos and Thailand. Over 80 million people and 11 million vehicles crossed the bridge between 1994 and 2023.

The relationship between Türkiye—a nation with ambitions extending far beyond its immediate neighborhood—and Laos, a state quietly confident in the heart of the Indochinese Peninsula, may seem unlikely at first glance. What could possibly link Ankara and Vientiane, separated by thousands of kilometers?
