Laos, Thailand, Australia commemorate 30th anniversary of the 1st Lao-Thai Friendship bridge

KPL (KPL) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith, joined Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara and First Assistant Secretary, Southeast Asia Regional and Mainland Division, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Commonwealth of Australia Robyn Mudie for a ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the first Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge.

(KPL) Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith, joined Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara and First Assistant Secretary, Southeast Asia Regional and Mainland Division, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Commonwealth of Australia Robyn Mudie for a ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the first Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge.

Held on the bridge in Nong Kai, Thailand, the ceremony was also attended by Mayor of Vientiane of Laos, Governor of Thailand’s Nong Kai Province, deputy ministers, ambassadors, religious leaders and relevant officials of the three countries. 

Delivering remarks at the event, DPM Saleumxay Kommasith expressed gratitude on behalf of the government and people of Laos to the government and people of Australia for the assistance and support they have provided over the past years as well as their funding for the bridge construction.

The construction of the first Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge, spanning the Mekong between Vientiane of Laos and Nong Kai Province of eastern Thailand, was commenced in 1991.

Three years later the bridge was put into public use. Australia funded the project as a gift for the peoples of Laos and Thailand. Over 80 million people and 11 million vehicles crossed the bridge between 1994 and 2023.
