(KPL) Former prison of 16 legendary leaders of the Party and the Lao Patriotic Front has been rebuilt as a memorial which was inaugurated on Jul 13 in the presence of Vice President Phankham Viphavanh.

Minister of National Defence Gen. Chansamone Chanyalath, other ministers, officials, members of the armed forces and police also attended the inauguration ceremony held at Phongkheng Camp, Phonkheng village, Vientiane Capital.

The memorial was built to commemorate and explain deeply the detention story of 16 leaders of the Party and the Lao Patriotic Front.

Gen. Chansamone described the jailbreak where the leaders of the Party and the Lao Patriotic Front escaped Phonkheng prison and fled to a stronghold in northern Laos in 1960 as unprecedented in the history of the Lao PDR and rare in the world.

With approval from the Politburo of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the 8.5-billion-kip memorial was built on the premises of the Ministry of Defence between 2019 and July 2020 to honour the 16 leaders’ intelligence and courage in fighting against imperialists.

The memorial also aims to help visitors understand the history and struggles of the Lao people from 1945-1975.

The 16 leaders include Prince Souphanouvong, Nouhak Phoumsavanh, Phoumy Vongvichit, Phoun Sipaseut, Sithon Kommadam, Singkapo Sikhot-chounlamany, Meun Somvichit, Sisana Sisane, Ma Khaykhamphithoune, Khamphai Boupha, Bouasy Chaleunsouk,  Mahasomboun Vongnobountham, Phao Phimmachanh, Khamphet Phoum-mavanh, Phoukhao and  Manavong Isane.

For many women, home is not always a place of safety. Violence may be endured in silence because of social expectations, fear of stigma, economic dependence, or the belief that there is nowhere else to turn. Behind closed doors, abuse can undermine dignity, fracture families and limit futures.
