KPL On 4 November 2026, Australian Ambassador to the Lao PDR, Ms Megan Jones, paid a farewell call on Mr Khamphan Pheuyavong, Head of the Commission for Information and Education of the Party Central Committee before the conclusion of her posting in the Lao PDR.

They exchanged views on the continued growth of the Laos-Australia partnership over the past seven decades, with a particular emphasis on bilateral cooperation expanding across all sectors under the Laos-Australia Comprehensive Partnership, signed in 2024.

Discussions explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in the media sector, human resource development, Australia’s engagement with Party organisations, trade, investment and other areas of mutual interest.

During the meeting, Ambassador Jones thanked Mr Khamphan and Lao media colleagues for their continued support in strengthening Laos-Australia relations and advancing Australia’s engagement with the media sector following the transfer of the information portfolio to the Commission in 2025.

Australia would welcome opportunities to facilitate exchanges of experience and professional expertise between media organisations in both countries as part of ongoing efforts to deepen media cooperation between Laos and Australia.

Australian news agencies, including the ABC, are working to strengthen collaboration with Lao media through content sharing and capacity building, to enhance cultural links and promote mutual understanding between Laos and Australia.

The ABC television channel has been included in the LAOSAT programming package, enabling audiences in Laos to access a range of Australian programmes, strengthening cultural ties.

Over the past three years, Australia has supported a range of capacity-building initiatives in the media sector, including the ABC’s Digital Dialogue programme, the Stories Without Borders: Laos-Australia Content Creation Hackathon, as well as workshops on media business sustainability and the use of AI. Australia is also pleased to support study tour programmes designed to provide Lao media leaders with opportunities to engage and exchange experiences with their Australian counterparts.

Ambassador Jones expressed her appreciation that Laos had chosen Australia to support a series of geostrategic and geoeconomic workshops held in June this year, co-hosted between Australia and Party and state agencies of the Lao PDR.

Australia will be pleased to support similar initiatives in the years ahead to promote the exchange of professional expertise, people-to-people connection and further strengthen collaboration between Australia and Party and state organisations.
