General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee and President of the Lao PDR Thongloun Sisoulith received Comrade Tran Cam Tu, Politburo Member and Permanent Member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee, and a high-level Party and State delegation of Vietnam at the Party Central Committee Office in Vientiane on the morning of August 12, 2026.
The Vietnamese delegation was in Laos to attend the mourning and funeral ceremonies for Comrade Xaysomphone Phomvihane, Member of the Politburo of the LPRP Central Committee and President of the National Assembly of the Lao PDR, who passed away on August 8, 2026.On behalf of the LPRP, the Lao State and the Phomvihane family, President Thongloun expressed deep appreciation to Comrade Tran Cam Tu for leading the Vietnamese delegation to the mourning and funeral ceremonies. He also conveyed sincere thanks to the Party and State of Vietnam for sending a message of condolence and observing two days of national mourning in Vietnam.He said these gestures were a great source of comfort to the Lao Party, State, multi-ethnic people and the Phomvihane family, vividly demonstrating the great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic partnership between Laos and Vietnam.President Thongloun described Comrade Xaysomphone Phomvihane as a key leader of the LPRP who made important contributions to the revolutionary cause, national defence and development, and the implementation of the Party's principled renovation policy. Throughout his life, he devoted his energy and wisdom to the nation and the well-being of the multi-ethnic Lao people, while making significant contributions to nurturing the special relationship between Laos and Vietnam.He affirmed that, amid the profound sorrow, the Lao Party, State, armed forces, officials and people would transform their grief into concrete action, remain firmly united around the Party Central Committee, and continue implementing the Party's renovation policies and the resolutions of the 12th National Party Congress.Comrade Tran Cam Tu, on behalf of the Party, State and people of Vietnam, expressed profound condolences over the passing of Comrade Xaysomphone Phomvihane. He praised him as a highly respected Lao leader who devoted his life to national independence, freedom, people's well-being and national prosperity.Comrade Tran Cam Tu said his passing was a great loss to the Lao Party, State, people and the Phomvihane family, as well as to the Party, State and people of Vietnam, who had lost a close comrade and friend. He highlighted Comrade Xaysomphone Phomvihane's significant contributions to strengthening the great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic partnership between Laos and Vietnam.Both sides expressed profound appreciation for the valuable and timely support extended by the two Parties, States and peoples during their respective struggles for national liberation, as well as in current national defence and development efforts. They reaffirmed their commitment to protecting, nurturing and further strengthening the great friendship, special solidarity, comprehensive cooperation and strategic partnership between Laos and Vietnam, ensuring that the relationship continues to develop strongly and deliver greater benefits to both peoples.
