A total of 264 female sex workers in Oudomxay Province underwent HIV testing, with 12 individuals testing positive for the virus, according to the National Centre for HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).
The findings were presented during the HIV/AIDS and STI Review Meeting held in Vientiane Province on July 13, 2026.
The report noted that HIV prevalence among female sex workers in Oudomxay remains a public health concern. The province is estimated to have approximately 698 female sex workers, highlighting the need to strengthen HIV prevention programmes, expand access to voluntary testing services, and ensure timely treatment and care for people living with HIV.
Health authorities also emphasized the importance of intensifying HIV prevention and response efforts among key populations to reduce new infections, improve early diagnosis, and increase access to essential healthcare services.
