On 16 June 2026, Australian Ambassador Megan Jones met Mr Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister and Standing Member of the Cabinet, to discuss Laos’ economic development priorities and further opportunities to deepen Laos-Australia cooperation.

Ambassador Jones congratulated Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay on his recent appointments and thanked him for his strong support for the Laos-Australia partnership.
Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay shared the Government priority of growing investment in the Lao PDR for economic development and outlined the efforts of his team in advancing this under the National Economic and Social Development Plan (NESDP).
Ambassador Jones reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to supporting the Lao PDR’s economic growth and sustainable development through cooperation on trade, investment and economic programmes under our bilateral Comprehensive Partnership.
Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay welcomed Australia’s commitment to supporting Laos’ ambitions to grow investment opportunities in the country and Australia’s support for the conditions that underpin sustainable, high-quality investment that improves the lives and livelihoods of the Lao people through Australia’s economic and social development programmes in Laos, across the Mekong region, and with ASEAN partners.
Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay welcomed cooperation with Australia as Laos sought to work with partners to address the shared regional challenge of transnational crime, recognising the importance of regional collaboration to address shared challenges.
Ambassador Jones reaffirmed Australia’s enduring commitment to Laos as a trusted development, trade and investment partner, and both sides welcomed continued cooperation to advance shared prosperity and strong bilateral relations.
