The Government of Japan has approved grant assistance worth USD 91,345 to support the construction of new educational facilities at Keoku Lower Secondary School in Houaphanh Province, aiming to improve learning conditions for students and teachers in one of Laos’ remote areas.
The funding, provided through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), will be used to build a new classroom block, a toilet facility, and provide essential school equipment for Keoku village in Et district. The project is expected to significantly enhance both the educational and sanitary environment for the school community.
A grant contract was signed by Mr. Koizumi Tsutomu, Ambassador of Japan to the Lao PDR, and a representative of the local authorities, in a ceremony witnessed by Mr. Phonesouk Inthavong, Vice Governor of Houaphanh Province.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Koizumi expressed Japan’s hope that the upgraded facilities would create a safer, more supportive learning environment for future generations of Lao students, while also improving the working conditions of teachers and school staff.
He emphasized that education is a foundation for long-term development and that Japan remains committed to helping reduce regional disparities and strengthen human security at the grassroots level.
The GGP scheme provides financial support for small-scale but high-impact development initiatives that directly benefit local residents in developing countries, including the Lao PDR. Over the past three decades, Japan has supported 59 GGP projects in Houaphanh Province alone, with total assistance reaching approximately USD 4.2 million. These projects have covered key sectors such as education, healthcare, and rural infrastructure.
Japan affirmed its continued commitment to supporting community-level development in Laos, ensuring that vulnerable and remote populations are not left behind as the country pursues sustainable socio-economic growth.
