(KPL) Inflation in Laos dropped to 8.3 percent in May, down from 11.1 percent in April, according to the latest figures released by the Lao Statistics Bureau. The decline signals some relief for consumers amid ongoing economic pressures.

Despite the overall drop, several sectors continued to experience significant price hikes. The steepest increase was seen in the housing, water, electricity, and gas category, which rose by 21.6 percent. This was followed by medical care and medicines at 19.8 percent, household goods at 16.3 percent, and education costs at 15.5 percent.

In response to persistent inflation, the Lao government has strengthened efforts to stabilize the economy by implementing tighter monetary policies. The Bank of the Lao PDR is also working to address economic and financial challenges, with a target to reduce inflation to single digits by 2025.

Authorities remain cautious but optimistic that sustained policy measures will continue to ease inflationary pressure and help restore economic stability.
