(KPL) The Department of Livestock and Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has recently issued a notice to enhance surveillance and implement preventive measures against Anthrax, following outbreaks in neighboring countries.

These efforts aim to curb the potential spread of the disease to Vientiane, Laos’ capital.

On May 14, 2025, Mr. Viengkham Lorvanxay, Head of Non Khor Market in Xaysettha District, Vientiane, spoke to the media regarding preventive measures against a possible outbreak of anthrax.

"After learning of Anthrax outbreaks in neighbouring countries, Non Khor Market has enforced strict monitoring and prevention measures in compliance with the notification from the Department of Livestock and Fisheries. We conduct rigorous inspections of all imported meats—including beef, buffalo, pork, chicken, and others—ensuring that only products certified by veterinary officers at slaughterhouses are permitted for sale. Vendors must present a hygiene inspection certificate for meat and meat products issued by the Livestock and Fisheries Sector of Vientiane’s Department of Agriculture and Forestry before they can sell their meat or meat products."

Mr. Viengkham assured the public that all meat and meat products sold at Non Khor Market undergo veterinary inspections, meet quality standards, and are disease-free.

He urged consumers and residents in Vientiane not to panic due to rumors on social media, emphasizing that no Anthrax cases have been reported in Vientiane or any provinces nationwide. However, he called for continued vigilance to prevent potential outbreaks in Laos.

Non Khor Market remains fully stocked with consumer goods to meet demand, and strict price controls are in place to prevent unjustified price hikes or hoarding.

Traders are required to display clear price labels, and violators—such as those engaging in price gouging or tampering with scales—will face strict penalties.

Anthrax is a severe infectious disease affecting animals, historically reported in buffaloes, cows, goats, pigs, and horses, often causing mass fatalities. The disease can transmit to humans through contact with or consumption of contaminated meat, potentially leading to fatal consequences.
