(KPL) Authorities in Vientiane are deploying more than 90 traffic police officers and enforcing stricter road safety measures ahead of the upcoming Lao New Year, officials said on April 8, 2026.

Col. Khamson Sidavong, head of the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, said the measures are aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring a safe holiday period, when travel typically increases.

Officials said drivers must be physically fit and well-rested before traveling to avoid fatigue-related accidents.

Motorists are required to carry all necessary documents, including a valid driver’s license, vehicle registration, technical inspection certificate, road tax receipt, insurance and relevant permits for commercial vehicles.

Authorities also said motorcycle riders and passengers must wear helmets, while drivers and passengers in cars must use seatbelts.

Drivers are required to check vehicle conditions before travel, including lights, brakes, tires and other essential systems, and ensure cargo is securely fastened.

Authorities said speed limits will be strictly enforced. Vehicles on expressways must travel between 80 and 120 kilometers per hour, while speeds in urban areas must not exceed 30 to 40 kilometers per hour.

Passenger buses are prohibited from exceeding 70 kilometers per hour on rural highways, and all drivers must comply with posted road signs.

Officials said driving under the influence of alcohol is strictly prohibited, and violators will be detained until they are sober or released to a responsible person.

The use of mobile phones while driving is also banned, along with vehicle modifications such as high-intensity lights that may disturb other drivers.

Authorities said reckless driving, street racing and group driving that blocks traffic are prohibited. Passengers are not allowed to sit on the edges or tailgates of moving pickup trucks.

Public transport vehicles must not exceed passenger or cargo limits, and parents are prohibited from allowing minors to operate vehicles.

Stopping on expressways is not allowed except in emergencies, in which case warning signs must be clearly displayed.

Officials highlighted road safety concerns by citing 2025 data showing 6,779 accidents nationwide, resulting in 917 deaths and more than 10,000 injuries.

During last year’s Lao New Year period, authorities recorded 313 accidents, with 26 fatalities and 521 injuries.

Authorities said traffic police will strictly enforce the regulations throughout the holiday period. Violators may face fines, education measures or vehicle impoundment in serious cases.

Officials said the measures are intended to reduce accidents and protect lives during one of the country’s busiest travel seasons
