KPL The D87 train departing from Kunming and the D83 train leaving Vientiane on the China–Laos Railway set off simultaneously, marking the launch of the “Moving Forward” 2026 Spring Festival series with the themed event “Singing and Dancing Along the Way.” The dual departure symbolized shared celebration and connection, ushering in a festive season of cultural exchange between China and Laos.

Jointly organized by China and Laos, the event featured a rich lineup of transnational activities, including a Spring Festival gala, a dialogue on building a China–Laos community with a shared future, a Luang Prabang cloud tea party, and the release of the Top Ten News Stories of Lancang–Mekong Cooperation in 2025. Additional highlights included the themed exhibition “World Heritage Face to Face: China–Laos Sister Cities Hand in Hand” and a book club focusing on poverty alleviation.

A highlight of the celebrations took place aboard a train traveling from Vientiane to Luang Prabang, where passengers enjoyed vibrant performances of traditional Lao arts. The program included folk dances, solo and group singing, as well as instrumental performances on the khaen and flute. The onboard gala was organized to welcome a Chinese delegation and to commemorate the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Laos and China, coinciding with Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) celebrations.

Ms. Anolin Luanglat, Deputy Director of the National  College  of Arts, the Lao Ministry of Culture and Tourism, said the performance was organized under the theme “Music Along the Journey, Friendship Along the Way.” For the occasion, the National College of Arts dispatched 11 performers who presented six programs, including two dance pieces—Khaen Melody of Happiness and Lao–China Friendship—alongside traditional musical performances featuring the khaen and flute.

“The performances vividly reflected the daily life, cultural identity, and fine traditions of Lao people from different ethnic groups,” Ms. Anolin noted, adding that they brought joy, excitement, and a lively atmosphere to passengers traveling on the China–Laos Railway.

Beyond commemorating diplomatic ties, the event served as a meaningful platform for promoting exchanges in arts, culture, and literature. It further strengthened the close and enduring friendship between the peoples of Laos and China, contributing to deeper mutual understanding and sustained cooperation between the two nations.

The year 2026 marks the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Laos. The transnational Spring Festival gala, themed “Springtime Embraces All Things, Deep Neighborly Friendship,” brought together outstanding performance teams from both countries, showcasing their distinctive cultural styles while highlighting mutual learning and exchange. Yunnan Province plans to use this Spring Festival series as an opportunity to foster greater understanding and shared growth—particularly among younger generations—injecting fresh momentum into the building of a China–Laos community with a shared future.

This year also marks the fifth anniversary of the opening of the China–Laos Railway. As a landmark project of the Belt and Road Initiative, the railway has been recognized globally as a best-practice example of poverty reduction and has become an important cultural corridor promoting people-to-people connectivity between the two countries.

Looking ahead, Yunnan Province will leverage its geographical advantages and work closely with all sectors of Lao society to further develop this “golden route” for the benefit of both peoples. Initiatives such as the Lao-language magazine Champa for onboard reading and the television program China–Laos Railway Living Room will continue to serve as bridges for storytelling, sharing vivid accounts of friendship, cooperation, and shared happiness along the China–Laos Railway.
