(KPL) Phase 2 of the Lao–Thai railway project is nearing full operation, with trains expected to stop at the new Khamsavath Station in Vientiane, bringing cross-border rail services closer to the city center.

Located in Ban Khamsavath, Saysettha District, the station is about 4 kilometers from central Vientiane and near the iconic Pha That Luang. The extension means passengers traveling between Laos and Thailand will no longer need to travel to Thanalaeng Station to access the railway service.

Trial operations have already begun for direct trains connecting Bangkok and Vientiane, departing from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and arriving at Khamsavath Station, allowing passengers to travel on a single train without multiple transfers.

The new station will also feature integrated Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) and customs services to facilitate faster and more convenient cross-border travel.

The project is expected to support tourism growth between the two capitals while improving freight transport and cross-border trade. Officials say the expanded railway service will help reduce travel time and transportation costs for both passengers and businesses.
