As preparations continue for the election of the 10th Legislature of the National Assembly (NA), the National Election Committee has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring equal opportunities for all qualified Lao citizens to stand as candidates. Civil servants, members of the armed forces, police officers, entrepreneurs, and businesspeople who meet the established standards—regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, or socio-economic background—are eligible to run for seats in the National Assembly and Provincial People’s Councils.

Among those stepping forward this term is Mr. Bounthieng Lattanavong, a businessman contesting as Candidate No. 25 in Constituency No. 1 of Vientiane Capital. Moving from the private sector into the political arena, he has expressed his firm commitment to representing and protecting the rights and legitimate interests of Lao people of all ethnic groups.
In an interview with the Lao News Agency on February 17, 2026, Mr. Bounthieng outlined the motivations behind his candidacy. He began his career as an employee in a private company before rising to become a businessman. Over the years, he closely observed the leadership of the Party and State, as well as the contributions of former National Assembly members, particularly in advancing socio-economic development and improving citizens’ livelihoods nationwide.
He said that exposure to the ideas, perspectives, and guidance of senior leaders deepened his understanding of public service and strengthened his desire to contribute more directly to national development. Witnessing their concern for the well-being of the people further inspired him to take on greater responsibility.
As an entrepreneur, Mr. Bounthieng has actively supported agricultural development, including crop cultivation and livestock production. He underscored the need to transform agriculture into commercial production in order to secure stable incomes, expand market access, and increase export potential for Lao farmers. Drawing on his business experience and cooperation with relevant sectors—together with support from the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry—he believes he can help promote policies that foster sustainable livelihoods and community development.
If elected to the 10th Legislature of the National Assembly, Mr. Bounthieng has pledged to work closely with all stakeholders to safeguard citizens’ rights and interests while promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth in Vientiane Capital and throughout the country.
