As Lao people across the country come together in a spirit of unity and enthusiasm actively participating in patriotic and development-oriented emulation campaigns in preparation for the upcoming 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party authorities have issued a warning that certain ill-intentioned groups continue to exploit social media platforms to spread misinformation and sow social discord.
These groups deliberately produce and disseminate distorted and fabricated information (fake news), slander Party and State leadership, and spread unfounded rumors with malicious intent. Such actions aim to undermine the image and leadership role of the Party and the State, create public misunderstanding, weaken national unity, and disrupt social stability.
Call for Public Awareness and Responsibility
In response, the public is urged to remain alert, exercise critical thinking, and avoid becoming unwitting instruments of those spreading misinformation.
Members of the general public, civil servants, armed forces personnel, police officers, youth, and all social media users are called upon to heighten their vigilance and take the following actions:
- Do not easily believe rumors. Carefully analyze and verify information before accepting or believing it. News that uses extreme or inflammatory language to attack individuals or organizations is often unreliable or false.
- Verify information sources. Follow news only from official and trustworthy state media outlets, including National Television, National Radio, Pasaxon Newspaper, the Lao News Agency (KPL), and official social media pages of ministries and government agencies.
- “Stop – Think – Before Sharing.” Liking, commenting on, or sharing fake news—even unintentionally—contributes to its spread and may fuel social conflict.
- Reject and counter fake news. When encountering false information, report it to the relevant platform providers and advise people around you not to be misled.
Safeguarding Unity and Stability
The 12th Party Congress is a political event of profound importance to the destiny and future development of the nation. Unity, social stability, and a well-informed public are the strongest safeguards against misinformation and divisive attempts by hostile elements.
Authorities call on all citizens to work together, remain vigilant, and consume news responsibly in order to preserve peace, stability, and prosperity for the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
