(KPL) A ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Laos and Cuba (Nov 4, 1974 - 2024) took place on the evening of November 4, 2024, in Vientiane. The event was attended by President Thongloun Sisoulith and Cuban Politburo Member Esteban Lazo Hernández, who also serves as President of the National Assembly of People’s Power of Cuba.

The ceremony included remarks by Mr. Xaysomphone Phomvihane, President of the National Assembly of Laos, and Mr. Esteban Lazo Hernández, representing Cuba.

Both leaders reflected on the five decades of strong cooperation between Laos and Cuba, rooted in friendship and solidarity since Laos’ revolutionary struggle for national independence and against foreign imperialism in the 1960s and 70s.

The two Parties, national assemblies, states, and peoples of Laos and Cuba highly value this enduring bond. Despite the geographical distance, Laos and Cuba have seen steady growth in cooperation across various sectors.

Cuba’s government and people have extended significant support to Laos, notably through medical teams, Spanish language teachers, and sports instructors. This assistance has played a key role in strengthening Laos’ human resources, with hundreds of Lao citizens now holding important positions within the Party and Government.

Laos expressed appreciation for the deepening collaboration between the two countries’ national assemblies. Both sides have implemented a memorandum on legislative cooperation, facilitating parliamentary exchange visits, consultations, and the exchange of expertise and information.

The assemblies also continue to support each other at regional and international forums, including AIPA, IPU, and others.

Both nations affirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation in potential areas such as economics, trade, health, education, sports, agriculture, and mutual support in regional and international forums.

The celebration also included a photo exhibition highlighting the longstanding ties and shared history of friendship and solidarity between the leaders and people of Laos and Cuba.

Forging a Path to End AIDS in Lao PDR and Cambodia

In the heart of Southeast Asia, the Lao PDR and Cambodia stand united in efforts to end the HIV epidemic. While significant progress has been made, there is still much to do. UNAIDS data shows that ending AIDS as a public health threat is achievable by 2030, but only if countries, communities and partners close the gaps holding back progress. The bottom line is we can only end AIDS as a public health threat by overcoming it everywhere, for everyone.
