Laos and U.S. Hold Talks on Bilateral Trade Cooperation

(KPL) Senior officials from Laos and the United States met on September 18 to discuss strengthening bilateral trade ties. 

Mr. Manothong Vongxay, Deputy Minister of Industry and Commerce of Lao PDR, led the Lao delegation in talks with Mrs. Sarah Ellerma, the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the ASEAN-United States Economic Ministers' Meeting and the 56th ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting, both hosted by Lao PDR. These discussions form part of broader efforts to enhance economic cooperation between Southeast Asia and the U.S.

Mrs. Ellerma congratulated Laos on its upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN in 2024 and expressed strong support for ongoing trade and economic initiatives. Mr. Manothong, in return, welcomed the U.S. delegation and highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between the two nations.K

ey topics included U.S. aircraft standards, a significant area of focus in trade discussions. The U.S. has long been involved in various projects supporting Lao PDR, particularly within bilateral and multilateral frameworks, as well as through the ASEAN-U.S. partnership.

The U.S. government has also pledged to continue assisting Laos, especially in preparations for the country’s leadership role in ASEAN, with targeted support for the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. This commitment reinforces the growing economic ties between the two nations.
