(KPL/Prensa Latina) The Indian government is taking measures to ensure safe and reliable artificial intelligence, and counter disinformation and the spread of fake news on several platforms such as social media.

The Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology (IT), Jitin Prasada, told the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament), that the aim is to create security barriers based on IT rules and the Digital Media code of ethics.

The regulations impose legal obligations on intermediaries and social networking platforms to ensure their responsibility towards a safe and secure Internet, including their expeditious action to remove erroneous and obviously false information.

Failure to comply will result in penalties such as loss of safe port protection under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act 2000, prosecution or other subsequent actions, Prasada explained in a letter to the MPs.

The minister also highlighted the Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023, which guarantees the rights and duties of the principals of such information and imposes a duty on trustees to safeguard it as responsible for its use.
