(KPL) A bridge Mekong River linking Vientiane to Sayaboury Provinces will be temporarily opened for general public on April 12 during the celebration of Pi Mai Lao or Lao Lunar New Year.
Sedans or light-weight cars will be allowed to cross over the bridge, aiming to facilitate trade and communication between provinces, and districts, and link with neighbouring countries.
This was confirmed by the Mekong Bridge Construction Project supervisor, Mr Bouavieng Champaphanh, this week.
Construction of this bridge, located between Nasack village, Paklay district, Sayaboury province, and Khokkhaodor village of Sanakham district, Vientiane province, is reportedly 98% complete since work began in 2012.
“The concession company, Thongphoun-Oudomsub Road and Bridge Construction, is now focusing on cement and asphalt paving on each end of the bridge to make sure the sedans can pass during the Pi Mai Lao,” Mr Bouavieng said.
This is a steel bridge with a total length of 360 metres. It is 8 metres wide and has two lanes. The bridge cost 189 billion kip (USD 22.9 million), of which 20% (24 billion kip) was give as a grant from Holland and the rest was from the Lao Government.
