The handover ceremony for the Vang Vieng municipal road improvement project in Vientiane Province was held on 30 August 2026.

The event was attended by Minister of Culture and Tourism Suansavanh Viyaket, members of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, President of the Vientiane Provincial Administration Committee, the Vang Vieng District Party Secretary, representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), relevant ministries, local authorities, and contractors.

Ms Phonemaly Inthaphom, Director General of the Tourism Development Department and representative of the project management committee for the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Tourism Infrastructure Development Project Phase II, reported that this project is one of four sub-projects implemented in Vientiane Province and one of five sub-projects successfully completed under the GMS Tourism Infrastructure Development Project Phase II. Supported by a grant from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the contract was signed in October 2024 between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (the project owner) and the Road No. 8 Construction State Enterprise and LBD Construction and Bridge Joint Venture (the contractors), with a total contract value of 2.76 million USD. The project was 100% completed on 30 July 2026.

The project encompassed the improvement of 13 roads totalling 5,445 metres in length. Key construction and enhancement activities included upgrading the road surface quality by paving with asphalt, improving surface water drainage and roadside drainage systems, and upgrading existing drainage systems on 8 roads (totalling 7,966 metres), upgrading pavements and installing roadside safety barriers across 8 roads, and installing traffic signs,  road markings to regulate traffic flow and reduce accidents.

During the ceremony, Mr Sengphet Ananthavong, Deputy Director of Road No. 8 Construction State Enterprise and LBD Construction and Bridge Joint Venture, officially handed over the project.

Following the handover, Minister Suansavanh Viyaket delivered acceptance remarks, highly praising and congratulating the successful completion of the Vang Vieng municipal road improvement project.

She emphasised that the project is vital for upgrading Vang Vieng's transport infrastructure and tourism amenities, ensuring safer and more convenient travel, boosting tourism and investment attraction, generating income and employment, and elevating local living standards in alignment with green and sustainable development goals.

She also called upon the Vang Vieng district administration, local departments, the business sector, and residents to jointly maintain the cleanliness, beauty, and order of the roads.

She encouraged everyone to work together to develop Vang Vieng into a green, clean, beautiful, safe, and pedestrian-friendly tourist destination while acting as good hosts to leave a lasting impression on both domestic and international tourists.

Finally, Minister Suansavanh Viyaket officially handed over the project to the Vientiane Provincial Administration and Vang Vieng District, expressing her hope that all sectors will work together to utilise and preserve the infrastructure sustainably.

She urged the continuous development of Vang Vieng in accordance with the Vang Vieng Master Plan (2026–2036)—focused on being green, clean, beautiful, safe, and orderly—to further captivate visitors and draw increasing numbers of tourists to Vang Vieng and the Lao PDR as a whole.
