KPL The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has issued a warning about the possible impacts of the El Niño phenomenon during the 2026 rainy season in Laos.

According to the notice issued on May 11, 2026, El Niño conditions are expected to affect rainfall patterns across the country between May and July 2026, bringing below-average rainfall and hotter weather than usual.

Authorities warned that temperatures in some areas could rise to between 35–38 degrees Celsius, with irregular rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and reduced water levels in certain regions.

The ministry also noted that although some areas may experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, overall rainfall distribution is expected to remain uneven. This could increase risks of drought, water shortages, forest fires, and damage to agriculture and livestock.

From August to September 2026, El Niño conditions are forecast to weaken to a moderate level, but weather conditions may still fluctuate, with risks of storms, flash floods, landslides, and localized flooding continuing in some provinces.

The ministry urged local authorities and the public to prepare water storage systems, protect agricultural production, monitor weather updates closely, and strengthen disaster prevention measures to reduce possible impacts on lives and property.
