KPL The Lao PDR has successfully registered its first new plant variety, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to promote agricultural innovation and strengthen intellectual property protection in plant breeding.

Malaythong Kommasith, Minister of Industry and Commerce, recently presented the official plant variety registration certificate for the “Oumhak Mulberry No.1” variety, highlighting the growing capability of Lao plant breeders to compete on the international stage.

During a working visit to Luang Prabang, the minister handed the certificate to Mr. Kaenchan Sommavong, the owner and breeder of the “Oumhak Mulberry No.1” plant variety. The ceremony was witnessed by Bounleua Sinsayvoravong, Governor of Luang Prabang Province, along with representatives from the Department of Intellectual Property and other relevant sectors.

The newly registered variety is the result of natural selection and continued development by local farmers. It stands out for several key characteristics, including strong resilience to diseases and pests and the ability to adapt well to dry conditions. The fruit is also noted for its large size, attractive appearance, and distinctive sweet flavour.

Officials say the achievement demonstrates the potential of Lao researchers and farmers to develop competitive agricultural products while encouraging innovation in the country’s farming sector.

The initiative is the result of collaboration between the Department of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and the National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.

Authorities noted that the registration of this first new plant variety marks an important step in protecting the rights of plant breeders, creating income opportunities through production and licensing, and adding value to Lao products.

Relevant agencies plan to build on this success by promoting the registration of other promising plant varieties, including indigenous rice and local fruit species, in order to conserve the nation’s genetic resources and encourage Lao researchers to further advance modern agricultural development.
