The Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the Kingdom of Thailand have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations, as King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida of Thailand are undertaking a state visit to Laos from 16–18 March 2026.

The visit, made at the invitation of President Thongloun Sisoulith and his spouse, underscores the enduring friendship and close cooperation between the two neighbouring countries. It also highlights their shared commitment to advancing a strategic partnership aimed at promoting sustainable growth and development for the benefit of both nations.
An official welcoming ceremony was held on the morning of 17 March at the Presidential Palace in Vientiane, where Their Majesties were received with full honours. This was followed by formal bilateral talks between President Thongloun Sisoulith and Their Majesties, alongside high-level delegations from both sides.

During the meeting, President Thongloun Sisoulith extended a warm welcome and emphasised the historic significance of the visit, describing it as a milestone in Laos–Thailand relations. He noted that the visit reflects the shared determination of both countries to further strengthen cooperation and deepen longstanding ties.
The President also conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Lao government and people for the passing of the Queen Mother of Thailand, recognising her as a deeply respected figure whose loss is felt not only in Thailand but also in Laos.

He further expressed appreciation for the royal development initiatives undertaken by the Thai royal family, which have delivered tangible benefits to the Lao people and contributed meaningfully to national development, particularly in the fields of education, agriculture, and public health.
Both sides commended the steady progress of bilateral relations over the past 76 years, noting significant achievements across multiple sectors since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1950.

For his part, His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn expressed his pleasure at visiting Laos and extended gratitude for the warm hospitality shown by the Lao government and people. He reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to further strengthening the bonds of friendship, good neighbourliness, and strategic partnership between the two countries.
As part of the official programme, President Thongloun Sisoulith and his spouse escorted Their Majesties to visit the Lao Traditional Silk Centre, where they were welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith and his spouse.
In the evening, Their Majesties are scheduled to attend a traditional Baci ceremony and an official state banquet hosted in their honour at the Presidential Palace.
The visit is expected to further solidify Laos–Thailand relations and open new avenues for enhanced cooperation in the years ahead.
