(KPL/Yonhap) The government will expand public procurement programs for innovative artificial intelligence (AI) products from local companies to support the growth of the sector, Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol said Friday.

Koo outlined the plan during a meeting with executives from AI and robotics companies, aimed at reviewing the market entry and growth process of innovative firms that have entered the AI industry, the finance ministry said.

"Public procurement will serve as a catalyst for AI innovation, transforming people's lives and helping companies expand into global markets," Koos said, emphasizing that AI is a core strategic sector that will shape the country's future.

As part of the plan, the government will first introduce an exclusive review committee in September to accelerate the entry of innovative, high-performing AI products into the public procurement market.

The government will also require that at least 50 percent of components used in designated innovative products be domestically produced to strengthen ties with the local supply chain.

In addition, the government will continue expanding pilot purchases of innovative products, increasing the budget from 52.9 billion won (US$36.8 million) in 2025 to 83.9 billion won in 2026.
