(KPL) Lao PDR on January 10, 2026, celebrated National Digital Day, reaffirming the Party and Government’s commitment to advancing digital transformation as a key driver of national development.

National Digital Day, officially designated under Prime Ministerial Decree No. 301/PM dated October 31, 2023, coincides with January 10, symbolizing binary code, the foundation of digital technology. This year’s celebration was held under the theme “Developing Lao PDR’s Digital Infrastructure and Cultivating a Strong and Sustainable Digital Workforce.”

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister of Technology and Communications, Santisouk Simmalavong, emphasized that digital transformation is a strategic and long-term mission essential for strengthening national competitiveness and supporting sustainable development, as Laos advances toward a Digital Government, Digital Economy, and Digital Society.

He highlighted key achievements of the sector, including the expansion of the national fiber-optic network to over 36,000 kilometers, 4G coverage reaching 76 percent of villages, the launch of 5G services in 59 districts, and an internet usage rate of 63 percent nationwide. Progress has also been made in digital government, with the Government Intranet Network connecting all ministries and provinces, alongside the widespread use of the e-Office system.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Technology and Communications will prioritize implementing the resolutions of the 12th National Party Congress and the 10th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan. Focus will be placed on applying modern technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to improve state administration, public services, and economic productivity, while strengthening digital infrastructure and developing high-skilled digital human resources.

On the occasion, the Minister called on all sectors and citizens to actively apply digital technology, enhance digital literacy, and remain vigilant against cybercrime, contributing collectively to the country’s sustainable digital development.
