Body of Toddler Found in Luang Prabang, Linked to Fatal Boat Accident

KPL Rescue workers of the Lao Red Cross in Luang Prabang Province responded on the evening of December 25 to a report from residents of Khamlae Village in Nane District after the body of a child was found. Authorities identified the victim as a one-year-old Lao girl from the Hmong ethnic group.

She was one of three family members from Huaysam-or Village, Xayaboury District, who drowned after their boat struck a rock in the Mekong River near the Ting Cave area of Pak Ou District on December 18, 2025. The child’s body was taken to the morgue at Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital, where it will be kept until relatives arrange funeral rites.

According to an official report from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, dated December 19 and made public on December 22, the accident occurred when a tourist slow boat hit submerged rocks near the Pak Ou Caves and sank. The vessel was carrying 147 passengers, including 29 Lao nationals and 118 foreign tourists, most of whom were rescued shortly after the incident.
