KPL Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has called on the Buddhist Fellowship Organization of the Lao PDR (BFL) to undergo what he described as a “Strong, profound and comprehensive transformation” to strengthen public faith in Buddhism and reinforce confidence in Party and state leadership.

Speaking at the 9th National Congress of Monks’ Representatives on 23 December, Mr. Sonexay said the transformation should focus on reshaping the ideology and mindset of monks, novices and lay followers, while reinforcing respect for Buddhist teachings, monastic discipline, and national laws.

He urged the BFL to play a stronger role in promoting patriotism, moral values and social responsibility, while mobilising Buddhists to support Party resolutions and the country’s socio-economic development plans.

The prime minister praised the BFL’s achievements over the past five years but said remaining challenges needed to be addressed to meet agreed targets. He called for more effective and accessible preaching, including through modern media, and for reforms to religious ceremonies to ensure they remain meaningful while adapting to contemporary conditions.

Mr. Sonexay also emphasised the importance of preserving temples and sacred sites, expanding social welfare activities, supporting disaster relief, and encouraging greater use of domestic products in monastic supplies. He highlighted the role of Buddhist institutions in supporting national priorities, including efforts to combat drug abuse through moral education and public awareness.

He further called for stronger cooperation with Buddhist organisations in neighbouring countries and internationally, as well as closer engagement with overseas Lao Sangha communities, in line with the country’s foreign policy.

Addressing organisational reform, Mr. Sonexay urged the newly elected BFL Central Committee to swiftly translate the congress resolutions into concrete plans and regulations, clearly assign responsibilities within its leadership, and ensure strict adherence to Buddhist discipline and Sangha regulations.

He said the Central Committee must serve as a unifying force within the organisation and contribute actively to national development and the long-term goal of building socialism in Laos.
