Laos and Azerbaijan celebrated the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations on 9 December with a ceremony in Vientiane, attended by Lao Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane and Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov, along with senior officials and diplomats.

Both sides praised the steady growth of bilateral ties since diplomatic relations were established on 22 May 1995, citing increased high-level exchanges and closer political dialogue. The meeting between Presidents Thongloun Sisoulith and Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan in 2024 was highlighted as a key milestone that strengthened political commitment.

Laos and Azerbaijan reaffirmed plans to expand cooperation in political affairs, trade and investment, education, tourism and people-to-people exchanges, while continuing to coordinate closely in regional and international forums. Minister Thongsavanh also expressed appreciation for Azerbaijan’s support in human resource development through scholarships and training programmes.

The anniversary celebration, held as Laos marks the 50th National Day, took place in a warm atmosphere, with leaders of both nations exchanging congratulatory messages that underscored the resilience of their partnership.
