(KPL/Prensa Latina) Several research projects and clinical trials are currently underway with drugs developed in Cuba to address the current epidemiological situation with dengue and chikungunya viruses, both of which are transmitted throughout almost the entire country.

This was confirmed by Francisco Durán, National Director of Epidemiology at the Cuban Ministry of Public Health, in the most recent edition of the radio and television program Mesa Redonda.

“We are working intensely, as we did with COVID-19,” he emphasized, referring to the 21 ongoing research projects to address this health problem.

For patients in the chronic and subacute phases after chikungunya infection, two clinical trials are being conducted on the safety and therapeutic effect of Jusviza, an injectable drug used to control hyperinflammation, regulate the immune response, and reduce the risk of mortality in patients with severe or critical COVID-19.

In addition, another trial is underway to evaluate the effects, safety, and tolerability of rectal ozone therapy in patients with joint symptoms following the acute phase of chikungunya, as well as a trial designed to assess the protective effect of Cumeric, nasal drops containing turmeric as the active ingredient, on the clinical course of this arboviral disease.

The official listed other actions, such as the health intervention using Biomodulin T and Thymalin in at-risk populations in Havana, especially for adults between 70 and 74 years old, as well as for residents of the social protection center in the Cotorro district.

He also mentioned the research on the teratogenic effects of congenital chikungunya infection in pregnant women and newborns.

In his remarks, Durán described the epidemiological scenario as complex due to the circulation of arboviruses such as dengue and chikungunya, although with a downward trend.
