(KPL) On July 7, 2025, Mr. Phongsavanh Sisoulath, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Senior ASEAN Official of the Lao PDR, led a delegation to attend two key meetings: the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting and the Executive Committee Meeting of the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Commission.

The ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting gathered senior representatives from ASEAN member states, Timor-Leste, and the ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General. The meeting focused on preparations for several upcoming high-level events, including the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the ASEAN Ministerial Meetings with Dialogue Partners, the 26th ASEAN Plus Three Ministerial Meeting, the 15th East Asia Summit Ministerial Meeting, and the 32nd ASEAN Regional Forum, all scheduled to take place from July 8–11, 2025.

Participants also reviewed the implementation of outcomes from the 46th ASEAN Summit, with particular emphasis on Timor-Leste’s accession process as a full member of ASEAN, expected to be formalized during the 47th ASEAN Summit. The meeting considered new proposals for non-ASEAN countries to join the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia and preparations for the treaty’s signing by approved external partners.

In addition, the officials discussed progress on the Mutual Promotion Initiative 2.0, which seeks to align the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 with the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda. Updates on cooperation with ASEAN’s dialogue partners, development partners, and sectoral partners were also reviewed, with a reaffirmed commitment to strengthening ASEAN’s centrality in regional and global cooperation.

Later that morning, Mr. Phongsavanh also participated in the Executive Committee Meeting of the SEANWFZ Commission. The meeting assessed the implementation of the SEANWFZ Treaty Action Plan (2023–2027), discussed prospects for nuclear-weapon states to sign the Treaty Protocol, and reviewed the draft of a biennial resolution on the SEANWFZ Treaty. This resolution will be presented during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025.

Preparations for the upcoming SEANWFZ Commission Ministerial Meeting, scheduled for July 8, 2025, were also discussed.
