(KPL) To commemorate the 70th anniversary of its founding (20 July 1955 – 20 July 2025), the Lao Women’s Union (LWU), in partnership with the Lao Red Cross, has launched a nationwide blood donation campaign under the theme: “70 Years of Victory – Uniting to Give Blood to Save Lives.”
The week-long event, held from July 7 to 13 at Lao-ITECC in Vientiane, kicked off with an official ceremony attended by Dr. Chanthala Souksakhone, Head of the National Blood Transfusion Center, and Ms. Silikit Boupha, Vice President of the Lao Women’s Union, along with representatives from various ministries and social sectors.
“This campaign is not only a humanitarian effort but also a powerful tribute to the 70-year legacy of Lao women,” said Ms. Silikit in her opening remarks. “It reflects the unity, strength, and compassion that women have contributed throughout Lao history.”
The drive is part of a broader series of events commemorating the LWU’s anniversary, Party Days, and the implementation of Resolution 11 within the framework of the National Socio-Economic Development Plan.
Over 700 participants, including LWU members, government staff, private sector employees, and members of the public, joined the campaign. Beyond blood donations, participants also received free eye exams and eyeglasses. The event also featured a handicraft and cultural exhibition highlighting traditional Lao silk, handmade skirts (phaa sin), and other locally made products.

Organizers emphasized that the donated blood will support critical patients—particularly women facing maternal complications, surgery patients, and emergency cases—by boosting the national blood supply.
Ms. Silikit highlighted the historic role of Lao women from all ethnic groups in national liberation, development, and peacebuilding over the past seven decades. “Their enduring patriotism and unity have been a foundation of our country’s progress,” she said.
She also expressed appreciation to all sectors and individuals who have supported the LWU’s mission over the years and called on all eligible citizens to donate blood, encouraging them to invite friends, families, and colleagues to take part.
The Lao Women’s Union and Lao Red Cross hope this initiative will continue to grow in participation and impact, honoring Lao women’s legacy through a compassionate act that saves lives.
