(KPL) On June 1, 2025, the Ministry of National Defense marked the 101st anniversary of International Children's Day and the 45th anniversary of National Arbor Day with a ceremonial tree planting event at the Kaysone Phomvihane National Defense Academy. The initiative aims to promote environmental balance and sustainability by greening the campus and restoring natural ecosystems within the academy's grounds.

The event was graced by the presence of Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith, General Secretary of the Party Central Committee and President of the Lao PDR, along with other senior party and state leaders, military officials, and students.

Major General Chandy Soulivongsak, Director of the General Department of Forestry, emphasized the critical importance of forest conservation for the livelihoods of all ethnic groups. He noted that the Lao Party and Government have long recognized June 1 as a dual observance—both for International Children’s Day and National Arbor Day. Each year, citizens nationwide, including officials, soldiers, police, and civilians, take part in extensive tree planting activities. These efforts contribute toward the government’s ambitious goal of achieving 70% forest cover by 2025.

"The Party and Government have consistently prioritized the sustainable management of natural resources and the environment," said Major General Chandy. "This commitment is reflected in the designation of numerous protected and conservation forest areas across the country, as well as in the enactment of key legislation including the Forestry Law, Environmental Law, and Water Resources Law."

He called on all sectors of society—especially civil servants, military and police personnel, and parents from all ethnic communities—to actively engage in protecting natural resources, particularly forests and mountains. "Our goal is to ensure these vital resources endure for the Lao PDR, its people, and future generations," he added.
